The Problem With Prescriptions
The big problem with prescription medication is ensuring patients actually take them. A report from the World Health Organization found that roughly 50% of patients do not take their medications as prescribed - and approximately 30% of patients never fill their first prescription at all.
What is The Cause?
According to data, there are 2 main causes behind prescription noncompliance. The first is cost. Cost is a big problem in our United States health care system. And many don't know what services they have to help them.
There are many things that can help you if you can't afford your prescriptions, such as Patient Assistance Programs which vary by state. One example here in Connecticut is Husky Health. But even if your state doesn't offer a program, Medicare Part D can be provided by your private health insurance. Others may qualify for Medicare Extra Help.
Another reason for noncompliance is confusion: many people have too many prescriptions to take, or don't understand their instructions on when to take them. A simple solution for this would be a pill calendar or pill box. You can learn more on the FAQ page.
What Should You do About This?
If you are struggling with adherence to prescription drugs, I highly recommend buying a pill box, or ordering a calendar. Although I do have a free calendar linked below in which you can download and print at home completely for free.
